Horizon Grand Cru Horizon Strategist FPL Optimizer

The 2026/27 FPL Playbook

A guide to navigating variance, exploiting fixture swings, and utilizing the AI Chat Assistant and LP Math Solvers for the upcoming season.

The Core Philosophy: Math vs. Variance

Fantasy Premier League is a game of high short-term variance. In any given gameweek, random noise (deflections, red cards, missed penalties) can override statistical data. However, over a 38-gameweek season, FPL behaves like a marathon. By using mathematical optimization (Integer Programming and Beam Search simulation), we isolate and exploit the long-term statistical edge.

Rather than reacting emotionally to last week’s points, this handbook outlines how to leverage the strategy profiles in your apps to out-grind and out-plan your competition.

Playbook I: Horizon Grand Cru / FPL Optimizer

These apps run the V3 Grand Cru Engine paired with an AI Chat Assistant. The math solver evaluates multi-horizon Expected Points across an 8-Gameweek horizon, while offering real-time Quant Optimal vs. Template Shield Scenario comparison, Player Locking/Exclusion controls, and automated chip recommendation advisories.

Gameweeks 1–6: Early Shield & Stability TEMPLATE SHIELD / SAFE

The beginning of the season lacks fresh player data. Run the engine in Template Shield Scenario + SAFE Mode to shield your rank from early volatile swings.

  • Strategy & Scenario: Select Template Shield to force-lock consensus anchor assets (Top 1k EO ≥ 60%) like Haaland or Salah, while setting SAFE Mode for low-variance utility weighting.
  • Player Locks: Use the 🔒 Lock Button on player cards for personal non-negotiables.
  • Goal: Preserve budget, build squad value, and avoid early rank drops before the first international break.
Gameweeks 7–25: The Tactical Grind QUANT OPTIMAL / SAFE or RISKY

With solid form metrics established, toggle your scenario and risk mode based on your mini-league position.

  • If Leading / Protecting Rank: Maintain Template Shield Scenario + SAFE Mode to match consensus ownership and neutralize rival green arrows.
  • If Middle of Pack: Switch to Quant Optimal Scenario + SAFE Mode to unlock pure EV mathematical selection while keeping low-variance utility weights.
  • If Chasing Hard: Switch to Quant Optimal Scenario + RISKY Mode. The LP solver will apply differential weighting (βdiff = +5.0) to target high-upside players (< 15% EO) before they become mainstream.
  • Delta Metrics: Compare Delta xP (points sacrificed) vs Delta EO (ownership gained) in the top header bar before making transfers.
Gameweeks 26–34: Blank & Double Gameweek Exploit QUANT OPTIMAL / VALUE

The second half of the season is dominated by Blank and Double Gameweeks (DGWs).

  • Strategy & Scenario: Switch to Quant Optimal Scenario + VALUE Mode. This disables popularity sentiment filters and focuses purely on points-per-million and fixture multipliers.
  • Goal: The 8-GW transfer planner will queue transfers 3–4 weeks in advance to load up on double gameweek players, automatically out-planning reactive managers.
Gameweeks 35–38: The Endgame Sprint TARGET LOCKS & EXCLUDES

Execute custom tactical maneuvers to secure your mini-league title or target overall rank.

  • Defending Lead: Lock (🔒) your main rival's key assets to neutralize their upside.
  • Chasing Lead: Exclude (🚫) your rival's top players, switch to RISKY Mode, and let the solver pick explosive differential punts and unique captaincy picks.

Playbook II: FPL Strategist

FPL Strategist runs an Integer Programming solver. It maximizes immediate points and handles chips via static heuristics. Because it doesn't automate multi-week planning, you must play the long game manually.

Gameweeks 1–6: Price & Template Stability TEMPLATE SHIELD / SAFE

Avoid taking early unforced risks. Keep the solver in Template Shield + SAFE Mode.

  • Focus: Match template ownership, lock in key premium players, and let the solver find cheap value enablers that maintain squad structure.
Gameweeks 7–25: Hunting Differentials QUANT OPTIMAL / RISKY

Switch to Quant Optimal + RISKY Mode to hunt for rank climbs.

  • Mechanism: The solver automatically rewards low-owned players (< 15% selected by percent) while ignoring template protection constraints.
  • Execution: This triggers differential transfer options that bypass mainstream choices, giving you high-leverage opportunities.
Gameweeks 26–38: Double Gameweek Maximization VALUE MODE

Switch to VALUE Mode during fixture chaos.

  • Mechanism: Deactivates ownership filters, optimizing solely on expected points and costs.
  • Your Manual Step: Check upcoming fixture tables and manually prioritize transfers that bring in double gameweek players.

Understanding the Chip Advisor Logic

How the app determines when to recommend chip plays depends on the engine:

V3 Simulation (Horizon/Optimizer)

Powered by multiverse lookahead. The engine simulates playing the Wildcard, Free Hit, Bench Boost, or Triple Captain this week and compares it against saving it. If playing the chip today yields the highest 8-GW expected utility, it triggers a STRONG BUY.

Squad Heuristics (Strategist)

Powered by average squad scores. The engine calculates the average performance score of your 15 players. If it falls below a threshold (due to blank gameweeks or multiple injuries), it suggests a chip play:

  • Wildcard: Triggers if squad average falls below 4.0 (or 5.0 in Risky Mode).
  • Free Hit: Triggers in Risky Mode if average falls below 4.5.
Mathematical Formula for Strategist Chip Triggers
Squad Average Score = [Sum of (Player merit + Form * 2 + xG * 5 + xA * 3) * Fixtures Difficulty] / 15

If (avgScore < 4.0) → Recommend WILDCARD (STRONG BUY)

Take Action: Dominate with FPL Horizon

This playbook manual outlines the mathematical framework for optimization, but executing it manually every week is a major grind. The FPL Horizon application automates this entire process: it syncs with your team data instantly, runs high-dimensional solvers, and builds your perfect squad path with one click.
