Horizon Grand Cru Horizon Strategist FPL Optimizer

The 2026/27 FPL Playbook

A guide to navigating variance, exploiting fixture swings, and utilizing the AI Chat Assistant and LP Math Solvers for the upcoming season.

The Core Philosophy: Math vs. Variance

Fantasy Premier League is a game of high short-term variance. In any given gameweek, random noise (deflections, red cards, missed penalties) can override statistical data. However, over a 38-gameweek season, FPL behaves like a marathon. By using mathematical optimization (Integer Programming and Beam Search simulation), we isolate and exploit the long-term statistical edge.

Rather than reacting emotionally to last week’s points, this handbook outlines how to leverage the strategy profiles in your apps to out-grind and out-plan your competition.

Playbook I: Horizon Grand Cru / FPL Optimizer

These apps run the V3 Grand Cru Engine paired with an AI Chat Assistant. The math solver simulates over 5,000 future paths over an 8-Gameweek horizon, while the LLM agent actively reads press conferences to refine expected points based on qualitative injury news.

Gameweeks 1–6: The Template Shield SAFE MODE

The beginning of the season lacks fresh player data. Run the engine in SAFE Mode to shield your rank from early volatile swings.

  • Strategy: The engine aligns your picks with high-ownership elite assets. It uses Premium Captaincy Protection (a 1.15x objective multiplier for players > £10.0M) to ensure you always have a mathematically reliable captain.
  • Goal: Preserve your budget, build squad value, and avoid early rank drops before the first international break.
Gameweeks 7–25: The Tactical Grind SAFE / RISKY MODE

With solid form metrics established, toggle your strategy based on your league position.

  • If Leading: Keep the engine in SAFE Mode to match the template and defend your lead.
  • If Chasing: Switch to RISKY Mode. The engine will smoothly adjust the objective function to favor low-ownership differentials (under 5% owned) before they become popular.
Gameweeks 26–38: The Double Exploit VALUE MODE

The second half of the season is dominated by Blank and Double Gameweeks (DGWs).

  • Strategy: Switch to VALUE Mode. This completely disables ownership sentiment filters.
  • Goal: The 8-GW beam search simulator will focus purely on expected points, planning transfers 4–5 weeks in advance to load up on double gameweek players, automatically out-planning reactive managers.

Playbook II: FPL Strategist

FPL Strategist runs a 1-GW lookahead Integer Programming solver. It maximizes immediate points and handles chips via static heuristics. Because it doesn't automate multi-week planning, you must play the long game manually.

Gameweeks 1–6: Price & Template Stability SAFE MODE

Avoid taking early risks. Keep the solver in SAFE Mode.

  • Focus: Match template ownership, lock in key premium players, and let the solver find cheap value enablers that maintain structure.
Gameweeks 7–25: Hunting Differentials RISKY MODE

Switch to RISKY Mode to hunt for rank climbs.

  • Mechanism: The solver automatically applies a 1.25x score multiplier to low-owned players (< 5% selected by percent).
  • Execution: This triggers differential transfer options that bypass mainstream template choices, giving you high-leverage opportunities.
Gameweeks 26–38: Double Gameweek Maximization VALUE MODE

Switch to VALUE Mode during fixtures chaos.

  • Mechanism: Deactivates ownership filters, optimizing solely on expected points and costs.
  • Your Manual Step: Since the solver only looks 1 week ahead, check the upcoming fixture table and manually prioritize transfers that bring in double gameweek players.

Understanding the Chip Advisor Logic

How the app determines when to recommend chip plays depends on the engine:

V3 Simulation (Horizon/Optimizer)

Powered by multiverse lookahead. The engine simulates playing the Wildcard, Free Hit, Bench Boost, or Triple Captain this week and compares it against saving it. If playing the chip today yields the highest 8-GW expected utility, it triggers a STRONG BUY.

Squad Heuristics (Strategist)

Powered by average squad scores. The engine calculates the average performance score of your 15 players. If it falls below a threshold (due to blank gameweeks or multiple injuries), it suggests a chip play:

  • Wildcard: Triggers if squad average falls below 4.0 (or 5.0 in Risky Mode).
  • Free Hit: Triggers in Risky Mode if average falls below 4.5.
Mathematical Formula for Strategist Chip Triggers
Squad Average Score = [Sum of (Player merit + Form * 2 + xG * 5 + xA * 3) * Fixtures Difficulty] / 15

If (avgScore < 4.0) → Recommend WILDCARD (STRONG BUY)

Take Action: Dominate with FPL Horizon

This playbook manual outlines the mathematical framework for optimization, but executing it manually every week is a major grind. The FPL Horizon application automates this entire process: it syncs with your team data instantly, runs high-dimensional solvers, and builds your perfect squad path with one click.
